Cliff Cardinal, the young playwright who is best known for making waves at the Summerworks Festival with dark and provocative pieces like 2012’s Huff, is finally (and deservedly) going to have one of his scripts brought to life as part of the regular theatre season. The work in question is Stitch – which, when it was presented as part of the 2011 Summerworks Festival, proved to be a breakout project for both Cardinal and for star Cara Gee who has since gone on to star in the CBC’s critically acclaimed drama Strange Empire.

Stepping into the part for this production at the Aki Studio Theatre as part of the Native Earth Performing Arts‘ 2014/15 season is Georgina Beaty. It’s a relatively limited run, playing from the 3rd of June to the 14th, but well worth catching! More details about the production and ticket details in the press release below:

The raw, gripping drama, Stitch by Cliff Cardinal, comes to Toronto this June in a production produced by Culture Storm and presented by Native Earth Performing Arts. Stitch, starring Georgina Beaty as Kylie Grandview, is the runaway hit from Cree playwright Cliff Cardinal first seen at SummerWorks Performance Festival in 2011. Stitch was awarded the SummerWorks Spotlight Award for Performance, as well as Theatre Passe Muraille’s Emerging Artist Award for its notable artistic merit.

 

 

Stitch is a transgressive, daring drama about one of the nameless faces that blip through the world of internet pornography. One female performer plays twelve different characters, including the central role of Kylie Grandview, a porn star who has suffered massive psychological abuse and consequently makes questionable life choices. After a series of self-sabotaging decisions that lead to her own disfigurement and the loss of her child, Kylie makes one last attempt to redeem herself and to be heard. Stitch explores a woman’s desperate attempt to be understood.

“We are honoured to support Indigenous writer, Cliff Cardinal, and his artistic freedom in storytelling,” said Heather Haynes, Culture Storm. “This award-winning drama recognizes the importance of fostering Indigenous talent in Canada.”

Stitch stars 2013 Jessie-Award Winner for Outstanding Performance Georgina Beaty, whose fierce performance is nothing short of captivating. Beaty is a Toronto-based actor and graduate of Studio 58 and the University of Alberta who has performed on stages across Canada.

Stitch also brings together a tour de force creative team, led by Director Jovanni Sy. Sy, born in Manila and raised in Toronto, is a veteran of the theatre industry and has been with the play from the early drafts as Dramaturge. Artistic Director of Gateway Theatre in British Columbia, Sy wrote and performed in his twice Dora Award-nominated one-man play A Taste of Empire.

Multi-award winner and nominee, Andy Moro (Euro/Cree) is the production designer for Stitch. Twice named among NOW Magazine’s Top-10 theatre artists, Moro’s vast experience creating profoundly affecting minimalist stage designs made him the ideal choice. Moro’s vision of black-box design traps Kylie Grandview in a setting fraught with danger.

Culture Storm is proud to introduce Luca Caruso-Moro who makes his professional debut as composer for Stitch. Rounding out the team is stage manager, Jen Stobart, who has been stage managing large and small shows for over 25 years.

Whole cast of Smile at Us, Oh Lord-smAfter its sold-out 2014 run of Eugene Onegin last June in Toronto, the esteemed Vakhtangov Academic Theatre of Russia returns with a new theatrical spectacle for the international stage: Smile at Us, Oh Lord: an inspiring universal parable about the basic good in every human being. Directed by the company’s noted Artistic Director Rimas Tuminas, Smile at Us, Oh Lord runs Tuesday June 16 and Wednesday June 17 for two shows only at the historic Elgin Theatre, presented by Show One Productions. Of Rimas Tuminas’ Eugene Onegin, the critics raved: “Anyone who saw the Vakhtangov Theatre knows they are a first-rate troupe,” exclaimed The Guardian in London while Paris’ Le Monde proclaimed them “brilliant.”
The Vakhtangov production of Smile at Us, Oh Lord makes its debut outside of Russia with this North American tour and promises to mesmerize audiences as well.

In what is becoming a regular tour for the Vakhtangov, prior to its June 16-17 engagement in Toronto (its only Canadian date), Smile at Us, Oh Lord performs June 5-7 at New York City Center and June 12-13 at the Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston. It is presented in Russian with English surtitles and performed by an all-star cast of renowned actors.

With a plot full of tragi-comedic moments, accented by soulful music, Smile at Us, Oh Lord is the story of an “every man,” unrelentingly opposed to evil and wrongdoing, even as the world around him crumbles. His journey opens his eyes – and the audience’s hearts – to the fate of Jews around the world during the first half of the 20th century.

This poignant and exuberant work highlights the new kind of poetic physical theatre that the Vakhtangov Theatre is spearheading, and with a cast of 40, it tells a larger-than-life story of the common man, linked to a compassionate great love of mankind.

Smile at Us, Oh Lord is based on the novels of Grigory Yaakov Kanovich, one of the most prolific modern Russian-language writers today. While born in Lithuania of Jewish heritage, he spent his childhood in exile in Kazakhstan. His family returned to Vilnius in 1945, he published his first book of poetry in 1948, graduated from university in 1953 and moved to Israel in 1993. Kanovich is the author of an epic saga dealing with the struggles of Eastern European Jewry from the 19th century to the present day. His books, plays and poetry have been translated into 14 languages with more than 1.5 million copies, and counting, printed.

Based in the heart of Moscow, the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia (http://www.vakhtangov.ru/en) was founded in 1921 by legendary Russian theatrical director and Stanislavsky scholar, Evgeny Vakhtangov and continues to be one of the country’s leading theatres. Lithuanian-born Rimas Tuminas is the first foreign director to head the Vakhtangov Theatre, where he has served as artistic director since he was invited to hold the position in 2007.

Tuminas first developed Smile at Us, Oh Lord at the Maly Theater of Vilnius in 1994, which he founded in 1990, and toured extensively across Europe. This current production premiered in Moscow in March 2014, co-created with composer Faustas Latenas and set designer Adomas Yacovskis.

Culture enthusiasts and music lovers can start making summer plans — the entertainment schedule is now available for PANAMANIA, presented by CIBC, the 35-day TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games arts and culture festival.

Unprecedented in scale, PANAMANIA will feature more than 1,300 artists in 250 performances and exhibitions across Toronto from July 10 to August 15. The festival will showcase the diverse cultures and artistic excellence of Ontario, Canada and the Americas through music, theatre, dance and more, with free and ticketed events.

Major music headliners scheduled to perform free outdoor concerts during PANAMANIA will include Grammy-, Latin Grammy- and Juno-award winning artists. The music lineup includes the Flaming Lips, Calle 13, The Roots, A Tribe Called Red, Janelle Monae, Café Tacvba, Brigitte Boisjoli, Chromeo, Jann Arden, Choc Quib Town, Death from Above 1979, Damien Robitaille, Lila Downs, Lights, Luciano, Dragonette, Colin James, USS, Marie-Pierre Arthur, Tanya Tagaq and the Barra MacNeils.

“The Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, unlike anything this city has ever seen. Not only are we going to have some of the best athletes in the world compete in our backyard, we’re going to have 35 days of music, arts and culture that will inspire us and bring the city to life,” said Saäd Rafi, chief executive officer of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015).

PANAMANIA will be spread across the following four programs:

·       PANAMANIA presentations (July 10–August 15, free and ticketed): Will feature 40 national and international performances and exhibitions, including 28 new works commissioned by TO2015 that will have their world premieres during PANAMANIA. The diverse spectrum of music, theatre, dance, visual arts, comedy, circus and fashion will feature distinguished award-winning artists, including Robert Lepage, Sandra Shamas, Edward Burtynsky, Veronica Tennant, Mustafa the Poet, Rick Miller, Crystal Pite and more.

·       PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square (July 10–26 and August 7–12, free): Bright and energetic design elements will envelop the Square, which will feature daily live music and entertainment programming that will culminate with nightly concerts on the main stage and fireworks, co-produced with the City of Toronto. Victory Celebrations, presented by CIBC, will honour medal-winning athletes nightly at 7 p.m. Jumbo video screens will feature live Games coverage and a special live broadcast of the Pan Am Opening Ceremony, created by Cirque du Soleil, on July 10. Additionally, the Parapan Am Closing Ceremony will be held at Nathan Phillips Square on August 15.

·       CIBC Pan Am Park (July 11–25, free): Experience the ultimate street party in the heart of the largest sport competition cluster on the grounds of Exhibition Place. Daily programming will include live music, interactive sponsor activations, food and fun for the whole family. Great tickets are still available to the many Pan Am sports taking place at CIBC Pan Am Park, including beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, rugby and gymnastics. Tickets for these sports will be available on May 8, at 1 p.m. at TORONTO2015.org/tickets.

·       PANAMANIA Live @ The Distillery District (July 11–25, free): Take in the sights, sounds and tastes of the Americas while strolling the cobblestone lanes. The Distillery District, located next to the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes’ Village, will be a hub of activity during the Pan Am Games. There will also be multitude of ticketed PANAMANIA presentations taking place at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

The iconic Twyla Tharp is celebrating the 50th anniversary of her 1965 choreographic debut of Tank Dive with an American tour that includes one special stop in Toronto at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts.  It has been over two decades since Twyla Tharp Dance last performed in Toronto.

With 12 new Tharp dancers, the choreographer will premiere a double bill of new works featuring the music of J.S. Bach, Henry Butler, Steven Bernstein, and John Zorn’s vibrant introductory FANFARE. The first new dance, PRELUDES AND FUGUES, set to J.S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier,” radiates with Tharp’s generous spirit and humanity. The wild and raucous humour that Tharp finds in the jazz of Henry Butler and Steve Bernstein runs rampant through YOWZIE, the second new dance.

An artist who has crossed over all dance styles and broken boundaries in the form, Twyla Tharp’s signature style is an eclectic integration of classical discipline and vocabulary with avant-garde rebellion.  She has choreographed more than 160 works for film, Broadway, Television, even the skating rink, and 129 dances for such companies as American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, New York City Ballet, The Boston Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, The Martha Graham Dance Company, Miami City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and Canada’s own Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Deuce Coupe, her ballet for The Joffrey set to the music of The Beach Boys, is widely-considered the first successful cross-over ballet and is a staple in the company’s repertoire.

In 1976 Twyla Tharp choreographed Push Comes to Shove for Mikhail Baryshnikov, with whom she went on to share a long-time artistic partnership. In 1981 Tharp commissioned David Byrne to compose the music for her first Broadway production, The Catherine Wheel. In 2003 Tharp won the Best Choreography Tony Award for Movin’ Out, which she set to the songs of Billy Joel. Tharp’s Hollywood hits include Hair, Amadeus, and Ragtime with director Milos Forman.

For 50 years Twyla Tharp’s singular imagination has been changing and shaping the American dance and entertainment canons. Today, Ms. Tharp continues to create.

Why is it so expensive to create a performance piece? How do independent theatre practitioners produce new work without risking financial insecurity? These are questions Why Not Theatre has asked itself repeatedly. For the past two years, Why Not has been actively trying to answer these questions with alternative producing models. Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Toronto Arts Council’s Open Door program, The RISER Project is their latest initiative to address this issue.Small productions and independent theatre companies are often burdened with large costs for theatre rentals and production expenses, making it near impossible to have financially successful runs with their works. As part of The RISER Project, companies are given the opportunity to share resources, whether they be technical, mentorship or otherwise,  to bolster their new works. The new works are then presented in a six week series split into two parts, where production tools are offered communally by the Project.

Part of the innovation in the model lays in that The RISER Project brings together a community of senior leadership to work with emerging and indie artists to support the artistic risk necessary to create new art. 2015’s round of The RISER Project features Necessary Angel, Nightwood Theatre, fuGEN Theatre and The Theatre Centre as senior partners. These partners exist to lend support in any capacity necessary, spanning anything from mentorship to the lending of a space to partnering with the artists for future productions.

“There are a great deal of opportunities within the Toronto theatre community for mentorship and the development of artists but The RISER Project is unique in that it creates a rare opportunity for companies and artists to be mentored through production,” notes Why Not Theatre’s Artistic Director Ravi Jain, “this model empowers artists to find their voice and not rely on curation or abstract training.”

This year, The RISER Project features four Canadian theatre companies’ new works, three of which are world premieres. All performances will be held at The Theatre Centre (1115 Queen St W). The RISER Project features two performances in succession every night.

Mouthpiece

Running: April 17 – May 3The world premiere of Mouthpiece follows one woman, for one day, as she tries to find her voice. In this genre bending performnace, Nostbakken and Sadava express the inner conflict that exists within a modern woman’s head, interweaving a cappella harmony, dissonance, text and a range of physicality including dance and physical storytelling.

Mouthpiece is the first Canadian production from Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava. In addition to being co-artistic directors of Quote Unquote Collective, Nostbakken’s work includes being a core member of multi award winning international company Theatre Ad Infinitum and Sadava’s previous work includes assisting in the creation of five time Dora nominated The Double with RISER colleagues BadNewDays.

Little Death features lighting design by Dora Award winner Andre du Toit (The Double) and choreography by Dora Award winner Monica Dottor (The Penelopiad).

Mahmoud is an exuberant Iranian engineer-cum-taxi driver who relishes the chance to regale passengers with his love of Persian culture. Emanuelos, a fabulously gay Spanish perfume salesman, can talk a mile-a-minute about his boyfriend, Behnam. And then there’s Tara, an awkwardly charming Iranian Canadian preteen who just wants to be normal. When the three strangers, all played by Tara Grammy, find themselves crossing paths in Toronto, their experiences with racism, sexism, homophobia, political structures and everything in between become intertwined in unexpected ways, taking an exacting look at the ways diasporic populations deal with instability in their country of origin and the personhood they have in their new homes.

Mahmoud’s return run will coincide with its publication with Playwrights Canada Press.

Artistic producer of SummerWorks Michael Rubenfeld is pleased to announce the lineup of international shows, workshops and conversations coming to Toronto this February for the inaugural Progress. The festival brings together international performances to engage in a larger conversation about language, accessibility and what progress means to Toronto’s performance ecology. Progress features six international shows, six languages and five free artist workshops and talks. Programming has been curated by nine different companies.

“I am incredibly excited and proud of how many different companies have come together to make this event happen,” says Rubenfeld. “Progress is bringing together a series of essential conversations being had by some of our city’s vital thought-leaders in performance. This is a festival led by a collective desire to collaborate in how we think about performance in Toronto and the result is a staggeringly unique and diverse program of work.”

All Progress performances take place at The Theatre Centre (1115 Queen St W), host venue of the festival. “As the home of Progress, The Theatre Centre will serve as that point of connection between international programming, innovative workshops, rich and diverse dialogues and the local community. We are thrilled to be partnering with SummerWorks Performance Festival to produce the inaugural Progress festival,” notes The Theatre Centre’s General and Artistic Director Franco Boni.

Three figures run in a circle, struggling to continue as they spiral into the depths of Israeli consciousness. As their journey becomes harder and more painful, their stories break down, revealing the wounds of contemporary Israeli society. Combining dance, text, theatre and grueling physicality, Marathon uses the autobiographical stories of the performers to reflect a state of constant emergency. Who will survive? And how?

Marathon premiered at the 2012 Acco Fringe Festival. This is its North American English-language premiere. Following Progress it tours Canada, visiting Public Energy (Peterborough), the undercurrents Festival (Ottawa) and the Chutzpah! Festival (Vancouver).

Marathon is co-presented with The Koffler Centre for the Arts, and generously supported by Spotlight on Israeli Culture, the Embassy of Israel and the Israeli Consulate (Toronto).

Performance-lecture The Messiah Complex 5.0 uses the Harlow experiments as a springboard to explore the concept of religious evolution. The Harlow experiments were used to study infant relationships by replacing newborn monkeys’ mothers with surrogates made of cloth and wire. Separated into segments, acclaimed artist Michael Dudeck first explores the evolution of faith, religious practice and iconography from a queer perspective. The multidisciplinary work culminates in the creation of hybrid images, videos, diagrams and texts from pop culture, ancient religion, Freudian psychoanalysis, archaeology, queer theory and anthropology. The work creates a hypnotic stylized ritual that’s immersive and disturbing.

Brazilian actor and director Enrique Diaz performs in a critically acclaimed adaptation of Daniel MacIvor’s Monster. Presenting this classic Canadian play in Portuguese introduces it to a new community in Toronto.

Diaz transforms himself into a series of MacIvor’s characters, from a young boy who tells the story of the neighbour who hacked up his father in the basement to quarrelling lovers or a filmmaker who never completed his epic film, these characters are separate yet eerily related.

FADO Performance Art Centre presents Silent Dinner, created with artist Amanda Coogan and in collaboration with local artists, performers and non-performers. Silent Dinner is an eight hour performance in which 10 people prepare, cook and eat a dinner in complete silence. The participants are a combination of Deaf, CODA (children of Deaf adults) and hearing artists, performers and non-performers from Toronto. Post-performance, the audience will be invited for dessert and conversation with Coogan and collaborators. ASL interpretation provided.

and Benjamin Kamino. People from any artistic background, with any level of experience are invited to join in collaborative, dance-derived processes. Following the workshop, the public is invited to witness what’s been created as the seeds of initial ideas and share their thoughts with the makers.

Also during the festival, Dancemakers will curate ‘Dance as Metaphor, Language and Lens’, a conversation featuring Progress artists Aharona Israel and Meher Awachri, along with Dancemakers’ resident Zoja Smutny.

lorraine_singing_newWild Women (Don’t Get The Blues) is a powerful 5-part Cabaret Series launched by the Toronto legendary singer/performer Lorraine Segato, as part of her two-year Artist-In-Residency program at Regent Park.

The series kicks off on Wednesday December 10, 8:00pm at the Paintbox Bistro (555 Dundas St. E.). This unusual and exciting cabaret-style show brings together a hugely talented Toronto group of artists: Lorraine Segato, Colleen Allen, Miku Graham, Stacie McGregor and Montreal chanteuse Lyne Tremblay. These fine singers will in turn celebrate the music and performances of the world’s most iconic women trailblazers, including Etta James, Edith Piaf, Ida Cox, Annie Lennox, Sylvia Plath and Amy Winehouse.

Artist in Residence at Soul Pepper Theatre, Colleen Allen, first opened this show to an enthusiastic response, and now teams up with Segato. Together they will not only feature these passionate female singers, but also include elements of spoken word and theatre art from diverse communities to offer an intimate look into the life of the music and moxy of Wild Women trailblazers. It will be a raucous, irreverent, and thrilling evening.

Segato is currently fulfilling a two-year term as Regent Park’s first honorary Artist-In-Residence, which is sponsored by The Daniels Corporation. Part of her mandate involves finding new ways to enrich, celebrate and draw attention to the developing neighbourhood of Regent Park, while curating cultural activities and events that further the envisioning of an international caliber artist residency program.

Segato recently hosted her first cultural event called The Legacy Salon Series (Spirited Conversations with Cultural Guardians), which featured an in-depth conversation with Garvia Bailey, the new morning show host at Jazz.FM91.

03_sextetIt looks like the Tarragon may have another winner in the works. After an impressively strong season opening with the bold and milky Enemy of the People (read our review here), their next mainstage offering is a who’s who of  Canadian theatre talent. Sextet, penned and directed by Morris Panych – one of this country’s greats – and starring Damien Atkins, Rebecca Northan , Laura Condlln, Bruce Dow, Matthew Edison & Jordan Pettle, is impressive if for no other reason than the sheer density of talent involved. WHAT:

Six musicians find themselves stranded at their hotel in a snowstorm, with only their instruments and each other to keep them warm. Where will everyone sleep when everyone has slept with everyone else? Underscored by their struggles to come to terms with their failing careers, failing marriages and unfulfilled desires, the sextet tries to prepare for a show, weather permitting. How long can they keep their composure before a blizzard of sexual confusion buries them all? This well-orchestrated game of “musical rooms” by Morris Panych – one of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights and directors – is also an homage to the transcendent power of beautiful music.

WHO:

Morris Panych‘s plays have garnered countless awards, including fourteen Jessie Richardson Awards, five Dora Mavor Moore Awards and two Governor General’s Literary Awards for Drama. He has directed over 100 theatre productions across Canada and the U.S.Sextet stars six exceptional actors:

Following a wildly successful run at the renowned La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City in February, Drink With Death is given a complete Toronto overhall with the best and brightest of the city’s vibrant indie folk scene in this morbid theatrical cabaret where the dead rise again to tell the stories of their untimely ends through song.

The Cameron House will become a portal into the afterlife, a speakeasy in purgatory with countless unexpected twists and turns for an hilarious and unexpectedly beautiful show.

There will be no boundary between performers and patrons as the cast recount their tragic tales amidst the audience. Who knows who might be sitting beside you?

Seize the opportunity to share a drink with the dearly departed and experience the humour, tragedy, pain and splendour behind humanity’s greatest fear.

The cast is filled with luminaries of Toronto’s vibrant indie urban folk scene, who have all written the music themselves; including three members of the explosive Lemon Bucket Orkestra; a former mortician turned musician / front person of Ada Dahli & The Pallbearers), NOW’s best songwriter of 2010 and 2012 nominee and a banjo/guitar picker who has opened for comedian Louis CK.

Romana Soutus is a New York based actress, director and producer whose work has been produced at the experimental theatre institution La MaMa ETC in New York City. Christopher Weatherstone is one of Toronto’s hottest up-and-coming musicians and has been nominated for a Juno award, four Canadian Folk Music awards and a SiriusXM Indie award.

An Enemy of the People,Tarragon TheaterTalk about starting with a bang. Artistic Director Richard Rose has opted to present an English translation of a German adaptation of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People as the Tarragon Theatre’s 2014/2015 season opener. It sounds like the kind of project that could have easily and almost literally gotten lost in translation but Rose’s bold choice as AD of the company and equally bold choices director of the production pay off in no uncertain terms.

At the heart of Enemy is a modern moral dilemma; When Thomas Stockmann (Joe Cobden), a small town’s well-meaning doctor discovers that the town’s spa’s waters are contaminated with waste and bacteria from factories upstream from the source, he sees the problem as having a simple solution – move the spa’s water intake further upstream. But with the spa being the town’s primary source of income and his solution representing a serious threat to its financial viability, others around him, including his brother Peter (Rick Roberts) – a business-friendly town councillor – and his friend Hovstad (Matthew Edison) – the anti-establishment leaning editor of the town’s paper – react to his findings far less pragmatically, leaving him trapped in the middle of an ideological battle. Soon, Stockmann’s simple determination puts him at odds with the rest of the townsfolk – whose motivations are not all as noble – and he ultimately finds himself in the surreal position of having to defend what seemed like solid moral high ground as well as his own good standing in the community.

Although Florian Borchmeyer’s adaptation may not have been penned with Canada or Toronto in mind, the parallels are hard to miss. Our contradictory economic dependence on the oil sands and distaste for its ecological consequences is the most obvious, but the less honourable side of City Hall politics, which we have become all too familiar with, also permeates the dramatic proceedings. This is most wonderfully obvious when, during a scene taking place at a town meeting, the boundaries of the production are busted wide open in glorious fashion. If there is one weakness to note, it is the occasional stylistic inconsistency of dialogue; while the production is fully modern in most respects, some lines still have the musty air of an age of didactic theatre gone-by and clash with those that have been more artfully updated.

While the ensemble cast – which also includes Tom Barnett, Brandon McGibbon, Richard McMillan, and Tamara Podemski – and their performances are all very strong (Roberts is at times particularly fun to watch romp around in hysterics), it is Rose’s unconventional staging that steals the show. Making no attempt to create a sense of visual realism, Rose imbues the production with imagery scrawled in chalk on the slate walls of the set (designed by Michelle Tracey), using the idea of “black and white” both a stylistic and thematic statement. Recognizable pop covers performed by the musically adept cast add extra layers of meaning while reinforcing the mood of artifice. Even the no-brainer concept of actors playing to the audience is tested, with Cobden at times delivering lines to the walls, effectively enhancing his sense of isolation.

The whole thing is a wonderfully slow and thought provoking burn that eventually builds to a delightful state of mania. Here’s hoping the entire season is this good.

TARR GRAPHIC 01_enemy-1Tarragon ranks as one of Toronto’s most reliable theatre companies so there is good reason to be excited for their 2014-15 season debut, an adventurous take on Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, which is helmed by Tarragon AD Richard Rose and features a cast jam packed with talented names (see the full press release included below). Previews start on September 16th and the show officially opens on the 24th. Tickets are available on the Tarragon website.

Tarragon Theatre launches its 2014-15 season with an English-language rendition of Florian Borchmeyer‘s and Thomas Ostermeier‘s celebrated adaptation and production of An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen. In what promises to be one of the most exciting events of the theatre season in Toronto, this contemporary mirror for our times previews from September 16, opens September 24 and runs to October 26 in Tarragon’s Mainspace.

Richard Rose, Tarragon’s Artistic Director, explains: “I attended Florian Borchmeyer’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People in a production by Thomas Ostermeier at the Schaubühne Theatre, Berlin in May 2013. Their contemporary take – both in adaptation and production – spoke clearly, directly and with complexity to the current Canadian struggle of environment versus economy. With the support of Florian Borchmeyer and  Thomas Ostermeier, I am honoured that we will be able to stage a version of their compelling production.”Written in 1882, Ibsen’s parable echoes the questions of today as it grapples with how we balance our conscience and our comfort – censored scientists, environmental crises, anarchist manifestos and the pitfalls of majority rule. As Rose recalls: “Tar sands, climate change, fracking, pipelines, Walkerton, the cod and salmon fisheries, tailing ponds and ethical oil; all came to mind as I experienced this production. I knew instantly that we had to produce it.”

Tarragon’s international playwright-in-residence, Maria Milisavljevic, translates Florian Borchmeyer’s adaptation which sets the classic but timely drama in a 21st-century spa town.

The Chief Medical Officer of a small Norwegian town, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, has made a shocking discovery, but to go public with his test results will spell the end of his town’s prosperity. The people don’t know that the newly-built Baths are contaminated with industrial waste, and if the world finds out, it will send the community into economic collapse. What is in the public interest when what is good for the economy comes into conflict with what is good for the environment? Is democracy the form of government best suited to address environmental problems?

Rose has pulled together an exceptionally talented ensemble for this thrilling work. Award-winning film, television and stage actor Joe Cobden (Tarragon’s Little One, Soulpepper’s Twelve Angry Men) portrays Dr. Stockmann; Rick Roberts (2014 ACTRA Toronto Award for title role in CBC-TV movie Jack about Jack Layton;

Tarragon’s The Small Room at the Top of the Stairs, Molière, John and Beatrice) plays his brother and town councillor who is also Chairman of the Baths’ board of directors. Tom Barnett (Tarragon’s Courageous, How It Works; Theatre Passe Muraille / Mirvish national tour of The Drawer Boy), Matthew Edison (Tarragon’s The Real World?, Forests; Canadian Stage’s Amadeus, Proof) and Brandon McGibbon (Tarragon’s Forests, The Misanthrope; Broadway’s ONCE) portray the publisher, editor and reporter of the local newspaper. Richard McMillan (11 seasons at Stratford Festival; Tarragon’s After Akhmatova, Molière; four Dora Awards) is Stockmann’s father-in-law, and Tamara Podemski (first Canadian actress and first Native American to win Special Jury Prize for Acting at Sundance Film Festival, original Canadian cast of RENT then RENT on Broadway, Bruce  McDonald’s film Dance  Me  Outside) plays Stockmann’s wife.Set and costume design is by Michelle Tracey, lighting design by Jason Hand, sound design by Thomas Ryder Payne. The 2014 SummerWorks Festival is entering its final weekend and there is no shortage of good shows to choose from! Here are some more highlights of the festival:

HERO-Juni-Bimm1-Caterwaul-small-620x500 Unintentionally Depressing Children’s Tales

Written by Erin Fleck, directed by Maya Rabinovitch, with puppets by Fleck and Sarah Fairlie, and set design by Roxanne Ignatius, Unintentionally Depressing Children’s Tales is a delightfully immersive and multidisciplinary theatrical work. Fleck’s handful of whimsical stories are delivered by gentle-voiced narrators with a team of shadow puppeteers providing the visuals. With the style of presentation and puppetry varying between each one, the format never gets stale.

Some of the puppet creations are truly impressive, such as a female specter composed of layers of materials of varying opacity which results in a beautiful three dimensional effect on screen. Ignatius’ set design, which transforms the usually sparse Lower Ossington Studio into a grand and cozy pillow fort guaranteed to evoke memories of slumber parties from one’s youth, is another highlight.

An atmospheric and dream-like creation from Amy Siegel and Sean Frey (and a host of collaborators), The Water Thief blends film, music, and live performance to great effect. There’s no narrative in the traditional sense of the word, but filmed images of an old man tending to an abandoned maritime community and a water thief (a type of water-powered mechanical clock) evokes some pensive themes. The real magic happens when the all the layers of the production (both figuratively and literally) are slowly and deliberately revealed, enhanced by a hauntingly melodic and repetitive musical landscape. The whole experience is deceptively simple and meditative, yet still incredibly powerful.

Writer/director Jonathan Seinen’s semi-documentary work about a thinly-veiled analogue of Chelsea Manning, the former US military data analyst who leaked sensitive and embarrassing classified documents and videos to WikiLeaks, is a fascinating portrait of a courageous individual enraged by the status quo and simultaneously struggling with gender identity. It’s not your typical one-two punch of themes, but reality is funny that way. The script includes text from the transcripts of Manning’s pre-trial hearings, court martial proceedings, public statements, and online chats, which adds a thick sheen of authenticity to the well-honed work.

A huge deal of credit for the success of this production lands squarely on the shoulders of lone performer Jeff Ho who delivers a powerhouse performance. Ho holds nothing back; his moments of joyful naivety, justice-fueled rebellion, and sorrowful realization are all piercingly honest.

HERO-LBaker_Perv_Face_300dpi-small-620x500Fuck You! You Fucking Perv!

Created and performed by powder blue-haired Leslie Baker, Fuck You! You Fucking Perv! bridges theatre with performance art while skirting some very dark and heavy sexual material in a delightfully manic way. Baker and her creative team make fantastic use of lighting blackouts and confrontational sound design, fragmenting her only loosely narrative and mood-swinging diatribe with ever-changing tableaus and cringe-inducing noises – with a little electro-swing thrown in for fun. Baker herself is a force of nature, often careening around the stage, wild-eyed and seemingly perpetually on the verge of a total meltdown. To call the piece “enjoyable” would not be accurate, but “daring” and “impressive” suit it just fine.

HERO-The-Good-Story-2-small-620x500The Good Story

This quiet and thoughtful work from playwright Alexa Gilker tells the story of Alex (Pippa Leslie), a mature and well-meaning young Christian missionary who, after unrooting herself and travelling to Mexico, Albania, and India to do good and spread the good word, discovers that the harsh realities of the world often trump good intentions. It’s a nuanced work that stays clear of melodrama while still being impactful. The story could use a little more room to breathe, especially with regards to Alex’s formative experiences in Mexico and Albania, both of which are passed over comparatively briefly.

Director Sandi Barrett keeps things simple and focused, and her talented young cast deliver solid performances. Leslie deserves mention for so aptly capturing Alex’s youthful determination, and a nod goes to Sehar Bhojani for her colourful portrayal of a pragmatic orphanage manager.

HERO-Recurring-John-option-2without-credits-small-620x500Recurring John

Part of the Musical Works in Concert Series, Kevin Wong’s Recurring John is a charming and ear-pleasing song cycle with a twist. The songs are performed by a series of characters, each of whom offers a glimpse into their own existence, but also – via references to their connection with or relationship to the titular character – collectively paint a narrative of his life. Most intriguing is that ‘John’ never actually appears before the audience, making it a sort of musical biography created out of negative space.

Wong’s compositions range from quiet and touching to brassy and toe-tapping, with lyrics that are elegant without being overly-precious. His orchestration is a real highlight, drawing a warm, rich, and plucky sound from his string-heavy ensemble. With a spectacular cast of performers and impressive direction (considering the limitations of the presentation) from Jeff Madden, it’s a shame that the work only gets two same-day performances. Here’s hoping for a full production to appear on stage some day soon!

The 2014 edition of SummerWorks is only barrelling into its first weekend, and we’ve already caught some remarkable shows! The highlight so far:

He Left Quietly

HERO-HLQ-crop-2-small-620x500Based on the true story and testimony of Duma Kumalo, a black South African who, under the Apartheid regime, was falsely convicted of murder and sentenced to death, He Left Quietly packs a powerful and heart-wrenching punch. Playwright Yaël Farber, herself a loosely-veiled character in the play, at one point expresses how little she really knew about the true nature of the Apartheid criminal justice system until hearing Duma’s story – a thought which no doubt resonated with many an audience member. That Duma was sent to death row for having simply been in the vicinity of a protest that eventually turned violent – an outcome made possible by the Apartheid laws which were Draconian and Orwellian in equal measure – is only the tip of the iceberg of revelations that emerge from the piece.

The Canadian team responsible for this production do a remarkable job with the material. Anchoring the work is Conrad Coates who, in his skilful turn as the former prisoner, conveys a quiet dignity and tangible struggle for inner peace. Director Leora Morris makes some very apt choices, such as to leave the elder Duma literally sitting front and centre for the vast majority of the show, allowing his weighty words to be unencumbered, and handing over the dramatic elements to talented performers Tawiah M’Carthy (Young Duma) and Aviva Armour-Ostroff (Woman).

A haunting and beautiful work.

Animal Pharmacy: A Medicine Show is a musical satire of the pharmaceutical industry in the style of an old-time medicine show. It follows snake oil impresario Doc Holiday as he cons wealthy heiress Mildred Milligram into appointing him CEO of her company, RX Pharmaceutical Corporation, in order to unleash his Miracle Cure on a sad and unsuspecting world. Along the way we meet rock star burnout Dean Codeine, a burlesque Nurse, and a mime named Billy. Oh … and hilarity ensues.

The best thing about the Toronto theatre scene?

I’m new to the scene, actually. Up till now I’ve been more of an indie music guy, but everyone I’ve met in the theatre scene so far (mostly the cast, crew, and creative of the show) have been incredibly supportive, nice, and wonderful. So that’s the best thing so far.

The worst thing about the Toronto theatre scene?

No complaints so far.

A Hypothetical: A week before the municipal election, a strange parasite contaminates the Toronto drinking water system, turning the vast majority of citizens into narrow-minded zombie-boobs with a pathological hatred of streetcars, and Rob Ford is shockingly re-elected for another four year term. What is your artistic response?

God help us all if that should happen. Artist response? Pray hard for the rapture. So … maybe write and sing some gospel tunes to help bring it on.
