Tell me about your SummerWorks show:

SEA FOAM BLUE 3 features the live art antics of Toronto/Montreal based ballsy feminist performance threesome WIVES. Task-based actions, some light guided meditation and whimsical DIY lighting techniques (mostly overhead and slide projectors) illuminate a story about loneliness, ocean fetishism, seduction, love and the commodification of women’s bodies. Our lonely-real-life mermaid searches for a mate underwater, on land, at the public swimming pool and in the depths of okCupid, revealing a cast of potential lovers that are at times hilarious and at other times just plain gross. Whatever you’re looking for be it true love, an answer, sexual satisfaction or the meaning of life, SEA FOAM BLUE 3 will rock you into existential peace.

What else are you looking forward to at the festival this year?

I can’t wait to see Regina of Light Fires in “Do I Have To Do Everything My Fucking Self?” at the Lower Ossington. I play in a band (called “July Talk”) so her and I are always running into each other but have never seen one another perform anything other than plain old rock and roll.

The best thing about the Toronto theatre scene?

Venues and spaces for weird, experimental and interdisciplinary voices like SummerWorks, the Rhubarb Festival, the Theatre Centre and Buddies in Badtimes! And Mill Street sponsorships.

The worst thing about the Toronto theatre scene?

People who piss on toilet seats and don’t laugh when something’s funny.

We’ve talked about this a lot. We’re learning to breath underwater so we can relocate to the bottom of Lake Ontario if such a thing happens. I also have a Rob Ford mask at home so we could always just kidnap the guy and parade around as him. (Have a pride flag to match it.)

More great shows on stage at this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival!

Licking Knives

This deceptively simple one-woman show from playwright/performer Melanie Hrymak is both elegantly written and performed. Hrymak tells the first-person tale of a young Ukranian woman’s experience growing up on a wheat farm and how she was ultimately separated from her family by the forces of World War Two. Hrymak’s performance is artfully restrained, perfectly capturing the essence of a character who has seen a lot in her scant few years and has grown a thick skin in response. A touching little gem.

Three Men in a Boat

This frivolous (and the term is meant in the best way possible) farce from Pea Green Theatre is a brilliant addition to the cannon of British twit humour, a sub-genre perfected by the likes of Monty Python and Hugh Laurie. Based on Jerome K. Jerome’s classic 1889 travelogue and adapted by Mark Brownell, Three Men in a Boat recounts the less-than-remarkable adventures of three listless uppercrust gentlemen whilst on a fortnight-long boating jaunt up the Thames. The trio of foppish friends are energetically played by Matt Pilipiak, Scott Garland, and Victor Pokinko, all of whom have impeccable comedic chops. Director Sue Miner keeps things tight and the pace perfectly brisk, contrasting the comically mundane details of the story with theatrical vim and vigour. Jolly good stuff.

Sex T-Rex Presents “Watch Out Wildkat!” (Yer Dealin’ WIth the Devil) / Peter n’ Chris and the Kinda OK Corral

This reviewer would normally not lump two shows together in one review, but weird and wonderful coincidences can happen at the Fringe, and the undeniable similarities between these two shows in terms of style, premise, and sheer entertainment value makes a favourable comparison inevitable. Although Peter n’ Chris might be a nose ahead in terms of brand name recognition amongst Fringe-goers, both they and Sex T-Rex are treating this year’s audiences to equally hysterical, cinematic, and physical comedy-based takes on the Western movie. The performers across both shows are manically wonderful, and both productions manage to lampoon the dusty genre to great effect. There are, however, a few notable differences. With a more sizeable cast at their disposal, Sex T-Rex’s staging is often elaborate and they are able to paint some truly impressive theatrical tableaus using nothing but their bodies. Peter n’ Chris’ buddy-chemistry is used to full effect, and they happily and spontaneously break the fourth wall when it suits them. Take your pick between shows – or better yet, pick both – you are guaranteed a great time.

Punch Up

After years of near-faultless Fringe and independent productions from playwright/director Kat Sandler and the remarkable creative team behind Theatre Brouhaha, a review of their latest offering – as though it would be anything but praise-worthy – almost seems like a superfluous exercise. Nevertheless… Punch-Up, like most of the Brouhaha canon, blends laugh-out-loud comedy with quirky and memorable characters and an intriguing ‘what-if’ premise. In the case of Punch Up that premise sees a gently deranged fan (Tim Walker) kidnaps a world-famous comedian (Colin Munch) believing that if he can make the love of his life – a suicidal woman he met the day before (Caitlin Driscoll) – laugh, he might save her life. Sandler guides the proceedings with perfectly frenetic comedic timing, and the cast all deliver artful and energetic performances. Watching the quick-fire back and forth between Munch and Walker is a particular treat.

The hits keep rolling in at the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival!

Potosi

Playwright Alexander Offord, this year’s Best New Play Contest winner, offers up a delightfully scathing and darkly comic parable about the sins of Canada’s resource industry, neo-colonialism, the role of gender-based power in the corporate rat race, poverty, and a handful of other controversial topics for good measure. Set in the regional office of a Canadian silver mining corporation operating out of a unspecified African nation, Offord sets up the story as a cat and mouse game between LeBlanc, a young hard-headed female lawyer flown out by the firm’s HQ to investigate allegations of rape on the part of the mine’s private security personnel, and Beamish, an evasive and quick-tongued PR guy tasked with keeping press and public scrutiny to a minimum. However their motives don’t remain straightforward for long, and as the situation outside the office grows increasingly unstable, so too do the pair inside. Nicole Wilson is admirably intimidating as LeBlanc, and Sean Sullivan is a treat to watch as the slimy and feeble Beamish.

Bard Fiction

First, a warning; those who have never seen Pulp Fiction may very well leave this production scratching their heads. Those who have only seen it once, or perhaps twice, will likely appreciate it. Those, however, who know it inside and out will find endless delight in Montreal-based Beyond the Mountain’s inventive Elizabethan adaptation of Tarantino’s modern classic. Almost every aspect of the film is given a hybridized treatment; costumes, weaponry, and food are all yanked back 400 years while still bearing a easily recognizable resemblance to the original – even the legendary soundtrack is recreated by a lone lute player. The dialogue, crafted by Aaron Greer, Ben Tallen & Brian Watson-Jones, is impressively Shakespearian – not only in style but wit as well – and the sizeable troupe deliver the famous (and now slightly more floral) lines with the same tone and inflection as the original cast. Sure, the show is essentially one giant gimmick, but it’s a gimmick that is very well executed and clearly comes from a place of love for both the Bard and the film.

More highlights from the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival!

You Detective

Toronto sketch comedy stalwarts, Fratwurst, present a unique and ambitious conceptual comedy caper that combines highlights from their existing repertoire with a choose-your-own adventure style detective drama. Much of the material is delightfully funny (a bit about an inept jingle writer elicited particularly loud howls) and even when there are rough patches, it’s just as entertaining to sit back and watch the three performers navigate the labyrinthine narrative structure required of the format. Seriously, this reviewer has seen a flow chart of the possible outcomes and it’s damned impressive.

Slut

With a title like that, one might expect Erin Thompson’s one woman show to either be a modern-day cautionary tale or an over-zealous celebration of female sexuality. Instead, Thompson avoids the spectral extremes that characterize lesser fringe shows of a similar ilk and presents a laudably nuanced and relatable tale of ‘Diana’s’ (a very thinly fictionalized version of Thompson herself) sexual evolution from clueless teen to confident lover. The tone is frank and open without being titillating, and the performance is dotted with plenty of good humour. Thompson is a stronger actor than singer, but a handful of droll musical interludes add some cabaret flair to the already colourful sixty minutes.

Amusement

Nobody’s Business Theatre, comprised of best-buds Johnnie Walker and Morgan Norwich, are back to celebrate their company’s ten-year anniversary with a pair of audience favourite remounts (the other being Redheaded Stepchild). Amusement is a delightfully crafted tale of two former university friends who, after reuniting over too many Caesars in the park, spontaneously decide to fly to Florida and apply for jobs at Disney World with unexpected results. The world Walker and Norwich create is rich with whimsy, satire, and over-the-top characters (performed with gusto by the duo), but it is the elegant way the innumerable threads of the story all come together that impresses most.

The 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival is in full swing and the buzz is already building! Here are a pair of our early favourites.

Acclaimed Toronto Playwright Rosa Laborde, throws her hat into the Fringe ring with a family drama about an alcoholic father who re-enters his three adult daughters’ lives shortly after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. On paper, it may sound like quintessential Canadian theatre fare, but there is nothing cut and paste about Laborde’s creation. With a fluid tone that ebbs and flows between drama and comedy, as well as a tug and pull between the ideas of accountability and forgiveness, it’s a rich and rewarding experience with an unusual twist. The site-specific venue, the Citizenry coffee shop on Queen West, is used to great effect; its surprising depth allowing for characters to exit the scene without ever fully leaving the presence of the audience. The cast as a whole is rock solid but it is Scott McCord who steals the scenes as Franco, the middle daughter’s musical husband who finds himself haplessly caught in the midst of his extended family’s crisis on fish taco night.

Time Stands Still

Donald Margulies 2010 Tony-nominated play is mounted here with a deft touch by Eclectic Theatre and director Jordan Merkur. Margulies’ protagonists, Sarah and James, a war photographer and a journalist who have shared their lives and careers abroad for nine years, are forced to return home to New York after Sarah is seriously injured in an IED explosion. The return to “civilization” proves to be a catalyst that exposes rifts in their relationship, and ironically shakes their sense of personal stability in a way that not even the chaos of war could. Markur wisely chooses to apply a naturalistic approach to the piece, giving the script and characters the spotlight. Jason Jazrawy is convincing as James, the forgiving yet frustrated journalist, and Carleigh Beverly also deserves acclaim for her role as Mandy, James’ editor’s young and seemingly naïve girlfriend. Mandy’s well-meaning cheerfulness is quietly scorned by the weary couple, but she makes a simple if compelling argument for happiness and in so doing, adds an additional and welcome dimension to Margulies’ work.

The Box, of of Toronto’s newer and more eccentric studio spaces, has been up and running for some time now, but is starting to get more notice as a performance venue. Emphasizing that evolution of purpose, is The Freeway Strangler, a new production from the administrators of The Box in in association with Straeon FilmWorks. As a serial killer runs rampant in Los Angeles, four Hollywood actors, confusing desire for happiness, systematically love and destroy each other in their quest for success. One character will wind up dead, and another will be revealed as the Freeway Strangler! It’s Clueless, meets Seinfeld, meets Clue!

Performed in a theatre space, unlike any other! The Box Toronto: Studio and Theatre was started in early 2013 by actor and producer, Vikki Velenosi and designed to support the development of new theatre work in downtown Toronto.

While some may scoff at the idea of cover bands and preemptively dismiss them as second rate wannabes, the truth is that the very best tribute artists are tremendous showmen and musicians in their own right who just happen to specialize in performing other artists’ work. Toronto’s Classic Albums Live has made it’s mark as a top notch nod to the best of rock and roll performed by and for purists of the genre.

Another less local example is Brit Floyd – billed (and with good reason) as the world’s greatest Pink Floyd show. Not only does this English ensemble perfectly capture the operatic prog-rock essence of Pink Floyd’s nearly 30-year recording career, but they also put on a damn fine show; a massive circular projection screen displays imagery borrowed from Pink Floyd’s legendary library of film projects and album covers, and a dazzling lighting array adds a sheen to the overall production value. It may not be Pink Floyd, but it’s certainly the next best thing and an absolute treat for any Pink Floyd fan.

The second half of the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival provided yet another smorgasbord of memorable performances. Here is round two of our festival roundup, with a couple of honourable mentions!

Sadly, Sketch Fest wrapped up last night, but there’s always a chance you’ll be able to catch some of these troupes in the ‘Best of the Fest’ show coming up this spring (details and participants TBA).

The Winter Beach Show

Comprised of players from other notable sketch troupes like Peter ‘n Chris, Sex T-Rex, and Picnicface, the Winter Beach Show is akin to the Traveling Wilburys of Canadian sketch. This concentrated blend of talent puts on a great show, with simple but expertly executed sketches like one in which an obnoxious actor/soldier pleads to his commander for time off from the Vietnam war so he can be in a community stage production of Tartuffe. Other highlights include a tender love scene between two astronauts via radio chatter, and a frantic sketch with more layers than Inception about an inept time traveler attempting to save the world.

2-Man No-Show

2-Man No-Show was almost literally a no-show when two days before their scheduled performance, Isaac Kessler (who is one half of the troupe – the other half being Ken Hall), accidentally skewered his foot with a sewing needle. Despite being dependent on crutches and under the influence of Tylenol 3s, Kessler nevertheless took to the stage where he and Hall delivered a truly memorable improv set. Admittedly, it was just as much the “will he or won’t he?” factor that comes with watching an otherwise adept physical performer battle through pain and adversity as it was the content or narrative of the set that made it memorable. Hall upped the ante – and the entertainment value – by challenging Kessler with gentle touches of Schadenfreude; moving much-needed chairs out of Kessler’s reach and goading him on with lines like “I’m off to the squash court. Care to join me?”. Kudos to you gentlemen for making some delicious proverbial lemonade.

The National Theatre of the World

Real life couple Matt Baram and Naomi Snieckus charm with a self-effacing and chemistry-laden set. This class-act duo focus base much of their material on relationship issues, with many of their quiet scenes having a vaguely Woody Allen-eqsue quality to them. With two static microphones allowing them to banter at intimate vocal levels and giving their hysterical overlapping dialogue the spotlight, their performance is admirably bereft of the limb flailing or purposeless yelling that lesser troupes resort to. Their interplay, which is simultaneously caring and adversarial, is a perfect example of art imitating life (or vice versa).

Vest of Friends

This young troupe get better every year and thankfully are starting to get the notice they deserve. Their material is as strong as any troupe at the festival, but what sets them apart is their casual but high-energy style. Nary a moment of their set goes by without one of the four members chiming in with an off-hand comment or blink-and-you’ll-miss-it joke. They have a true knack for making their prepared dialogue feel like seemingly spontaneous back and forth, and their wacky but tactful vocalizations give life to their characters.

Honourable Mentions:

The Connie Chungs delivered a decent set, but their closing sketch about H.P. Lovecraft hitting the club and attempting to woo women using cliche pickup lines with macabre twists was too good not to give special mention to here.

Death Ray Cabaret showcased the quirky writing talent of solo artist Kevin Matviw (who enlisted the help of an ensemble of performers to bring his sketches to life for his festival slot). A multi-part sketch about peer pressure was probably the best example of call-back humour in the festival, and a song sung by an innocent snowflake was ironic existentialism at its best.

Hot Thespian Action, the veteran and audience pleasing troupe from Winnipeg delivered a solid set – the highlight of which was a fantastical tale of a woman transported into her own neglected purse. This reviewer will never again be able to look at an abandoned tampon the same way again.

Parker and Seville have abandoned their vaudeville schtick in favour of a brand of sketch that lies somewhere between comedy and performance art. While some of their bits elicit more head scratching than laughs, others (especially those employing their oft used “heard but not seen” approach to characters) are riotously funny. If only real football press conferences were as wonderful and surreal as the one that they enacted.

The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival is not even half over, but has already offered up some spectacular performances. Here are some of the many highlights of the festival so far (and take note, many of these troupes have a second performance you can still catch)!

The Cupid Players

This boisterous gang from Chicago are effectively the answer to the riddle: What do you get when you cross a Broadway musical with sketch comedy? Polished numbers and catchy tunes reminiscent of Grease and The Rocky Horror Show act as counterpoint to delightfully un-polite lyrics and a seemingly endless parade of nearly-nude male performers.

Fratwurst

This trio impress with intelligent sketches that range from the literary to pure absurdity, and the fact that each of the three members fits a different archetype gives their stage presence a sense of triangular equilibrium. Their opener, a sketch that pokes holes in the poetic logic of Shakespeare’s famous “Friends, Romans, Countrymen” speech from Julius Caesar, proved to be a highlight, as did their closer, a wordless tragedy about a bald man and a balloon.

Falconpowder

These Sketch Fest vets are back again with another strong offering. With a style that hints at their Second City backgrounds, they manage to explore a theme – in this case the bonds of friendship among men – with both one-off sketches and a trisected story about a band of storm chasers. Their material is often high-concept (such as a sketch about a camera that takes photos of the near future) and their performance is rife with cinematic flair, but it is the thematic unity of their set that sets them apart from other troupes who often present less cohesive “best of” compilations.

The Reception

The Reception may be relative newcomers to Sketch Fest, but boy did they leave an impression. With a combination of sharp writing (put to use in a sketch about the planning of a parade described in rapid fire dialogue that could have been lifted from His Girl Friday), great concepts (such as a scene about an endless series of voicemails that paints a hysterical mental picture of a man’s doppelganger), highly polished performances (as demonstrated in a well rehearsed scene about a cop speaking to his clone in perfect unison), delightfully manic segues between scenes, and a little touch of that that elusive je-ne-sais-quois, this reviewer is already looking forward to more from them.

Ned and Dave

This two-man troupe is more l0w-key than many, but not at the expense of laughs. With chemistry and subtlety often working in their favour, Ned and Dave opt to push their scenes well past their natural conclusions and into the territory of the absurd. One memorable highlight is a sketch in which they read an excerpt from an erotic sci-fi novella that devolves into an overly-detailed lesson in martian sexual anatomy.

Peter ‘n Chris

Former Sketch Fest Audience Choice Award-Winners Peter ‘n Chris return with yet another hysterical long-form yarn – this time using the classic western as their departure point. With their usual melange of of mime, dance sequences, terrible puns, seamless ad-libs, over-the-top characters, and a very translucent fourth wall further cementing their reputation as one of the best sketch acts in the country, it is no surprise that an extra show had to be added to the festival lineup to accommodate audience demand.

The Templeton Philharmonic

Yet another duo worth mentioning, The Templeton Philharmonic prove that women are indeed just as funny as men (not that it’s ever been a question in this reviewer’s mind, but sadly the question does still get posed on occasion), and do so with flair. The two are obviously highly skilled performers and sharp wits, bringing a real sense of bizarre finesse to their characters (whether they be Edwardian ladies pardodying the recent Oscars, or former classmates crossing paths at a school reunion) and imbuing them with emotional realism.

Isaac Kessler & Ken Hall ……….. 2-MAN NO-SHOW!

If you had to pitch your act to a Hollywood producer as though it were a movie, your logline would be:

Ken: 2-MAN NO-SHOW – The absurd and unpredictable tale of two underdogs lost in the demands of modern day life but finding salvation and sanctuary in movies, music and friendship.

Isaac: 2-MAN NO-SHOW – Two Men, Two Dreams … One Reality. Take the ride of your life as these two heroes battle surmountable odds and dragons. Also, there will be nudity.

The most common misconception about sketch comedy is:

That it’s easy and anyone can do it. Being funny can be hard work – it’s not as easy as it looks.

You are commissioned to write a sketch about Rob Ford and Justin Bieber trapped on a lifeboat adrift in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. What happens?

Justin is terrified of the humongous Ford, because Rob ate Usher and Scooter Braun. Justin keeps him at bay with a large stick. Justin builds a floatation raft and retreats to it, but when he is unable to catch fish, he journeys back to the lifeboat and conditions Rob to take a submissive role by using pie and pussy as a positive reinforcer. Two hundred and twenty-seven days later, they somehow end up on a Mexican beach. Rob Ford disappears into the crack-filled jungle without a glance back. In the hospital, two officials question Justin and he responds by saying “”We’re just friends,” what are you saying. Said “there’s another,” and looked right in my eyes. My first love broke my heart for the first time.” The officials stare blankly at him.

My name is Dave Barclay, and with Matt Kowall we are Parker & Seville, Toronto’s tallest sketch duo.

If you had to pitch your act to a Hollywood producer as though it were a movie, your logline would be:

Two men run a scam on a Riverboat floating down the Mighty Mississippi, this fall on NBC’s Riverboat Rusedays.

What other troupes or workshops are you looking forward to seeing / attending this festival?

The Riverboat Gamblers, Des Moines’ sexiest Mark Twain impersonators. Also the Kids in the Hall do a live reading of SHOWBOAT! Is SHOWBOAT the one with OL’ MAN RIVER? Because I hope they give that one to Kevin McDonald!

The most common misconception about sketch comedy is:

It’s only performed on riverboats. NOT ANYMORE! GET WITH IT, AMERICA!

You are commissioned to write a sketch about Rob Ford and Justin Bieber trapped on a lifeboat adrift in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. What happens?

One of them gets caught in the big paddlewheel, but not the one you’d think! Oh, it says lifeboat.

This year is stacked and I don’t know if I’ll get to see all of these but I would love to check out The Templeton Philharmonic, Peter ‘N Chris, NTOW, The Weaker Vessels, Ladystache and The Kids In The Hall reading Brain Candy.
