Yin yang, that’s not a bad way of describing the Canadian Opera Company‘s double bill of Zemlinky’s subtle and cutting three-hander, and Puccini’s uproarious ensemble comedy. There are two elements that tie this pair of contrasting one-act operas together: the setting of Florence (whose skyline is beautifully unveiled in Gianni Schicchi), and the welcome presence of celebrated American bass-barritone Alan Held. We spoke with the outgoing and affable Mr. Held, who was kind enough to share his thoughts on the challenge and pleasure of playing such different parts over the course of one night, the physical experience that is an opera performance, and a great story from his youth about an unexpected run in with a legend of the operatic stage.

Opening tonight at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts is the Canadian Opera Company‘s lavish production of Handel’s Semele. Now if it wasn’t enough that this production, directed by acclaimed Chinese-born artist Zhang Huan and staring Canadian opera darling Jane Archibald, is rife with with saucy theatrical surprises and unexpected touches like a authentic pair of scene-stealing Sumo wrestlers (and yes, they do go at it on stage), it can also claim to have the oldest set in the world of opera.

That set is a 450 year old Ming Dynasty temple purchased and salvaged by the director, and literally rebuilt on the stage of the Four Seasons Centre. This 17 ton camphor wood behemoth took four nights, a team of imported Chinese specialists, and one specially-built crane to assemble. Not only is it a beautiful structure, but one rife with history; the story of the family that lived in the oft-repurposed temple is appropriately marked by operatic themes of infidelity and revenge.

Although this Pulitzer Prize winning play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart was written in 1936, You Can’t Take it with You‘s not so subtle social commentary is more relevant than ever. It takes on issues from the perspective of both the political left and right, criticizing the greed-fueled pursuit and accumulation of wealth (a popular refrain of  the ‘Occupy’ movement), and questioning the necessity of government taxation (an equally popular refrain of the Tea Party). Artfully squished in the middle is a charming love story and culture clash comedy.

Soulpepper‘s ambitious production of this classic opens tonight, and we had a chance to speak with cast member Tim Ziegler. Here are his thoughts on the politics of the play, on working with a family member, and his own future plans.

The Canadian Opera Company‘s quirky and gothic production of Jacques Offenbach’s imaginative and bohemian opera, The Tales of Hoffman, opened recently and we had a chance to speak with its star, Russell Thomas. Here is Russell with his thoughts on his colourful titular role, as well as his candid and anything but candy coated opinions on the implications of being a non-caucasian male opera singer and the cost of a successful career as a performing artist.

Oh, The Magnetic Fields. It would be so easy to label them as a middle aged hipster band, but I won’t, because nothing could be further from the truth. And the truth is that they’ve always been understated, melancholy, and deliver a one two punch of wry-dry onstage banter – long before it was en vogue for musicians to behave like social wallflowers. It has taken hipsters twenty years to catch up to and appropriate their style, and that ahead-of-the-curve-ness is testament to the fact that they were pioneers, not followers perpetually concerned with reinventing themselves or giving a shit about trends. In twenty years, when the “cool kids” have worn their plaid flannel shirts threadbare and abandoned their über-thick rimmed glasses in favour of pink tutus and top hats (I say this under the assumption that the 2032 equivalent of ‘Lumberjack Buddy Holly’ will be “Ballerina Henry Higgins”), the Fields will still be themselves, anachronistic or not.

To call them an indie band bears an extra weight of accuracy, for that moniker is not bestowed upon them for conforming to a genre (the irony of the word “independence” being used to lump music into a convenient category is already lost on too many), but precisely because they have always stood on their two feet. May they never stop doing so.

That wish may be unnecessary. With the launch of their new album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea – an album filled with darkly comedic tales of love and revenge – they are already gaining a lot of renewed and positive attention. With the reintroduction of their trademark synth infused sound, the album is being favourably compared to their 1999 mega-opus 69 Love Songs, a triple album of poppy bite sized compositions rife with romance and irony.

Before writer/composer Jonathan Larson made good on his dream of penning a smash Broadway hit, as he did with Rent, he questioned said dream in Tick Tick Boom. This modest musical about holding on to one’s ambitions in spite of the realities of life is one that hits close to home for the members of Half Pint Theatre. This fresh Toronto based company was founded by four talented and emerging musical theatre performers who, instead of waiting for their ship to come in, have decided to build their own damn ship and are self-producing Larson’s semi-autobiographical work (opening in two days at Buddies in Bad Times). Here are Esther Vallins, Alanna Stone, and Tara Litvak – three of the four founding members – with the story of their company so far and their own personal experiences with hitting the metaphorical wall.

The Canadian Opera Company can be given credit for its even handed programming choices. Crowd pleasing chestnuts are often well represented in their seasons’ line ups, but there are always a couple of lesser known dark horses that tantalize with possibility. One such example is Kaija Saariaho’s contemporary and contemplative Love from Afar, helmed by Cirque du Soleil veteran, Daniele Finzi Pasca, and currently playing at the Four Seasons Centre.

Finzi Pasca does not shy away from his festive roots, packing the production with eye candy and acrobatic flourishes. One of the performers contributing to this visual feast is Marla Brennan, clown and shadow puppeteer. Here’s Marla on her new found appreciation for the operatic genre, her own experience in the pursuit of love from afar, and the joys of smiling.

Popular musical theatre can, at its least interesting, be a pleasant but doughy experience (I’m looking at you Mamma Mia). Thank goodness for outside-of-the-box hits like Hair, The Rocky Horror Show, Avenue Q, Sweeny Todd, and of course, Tommy.

This psychedelic work, based on the concept album of the same name by legendary band The Who, was one of the first to marry the electric world of rock and roll with the footlights of Broadway – ultimately paving the way for the now pervasive jukebox musical, and subsequent rock opera hits like Green Day’s American Idiot.

A heads up for anyone interested in the convergence of new media and traditional theatre; you may be interested to check out Hamlet Live, an innovative and ambitious new presentation of the well known play. Audience members have the choice of either experiencing the production in the traditional manner – from a seat in the theatre – or for a lesser price, to stream the show online and in real time as it is captured by multiple camera operators.

The Toronto Fringe Festival has a delightful habit of spouting out some little gems that grow into big hits – The Drowsy Chaperone, Da Kink in My Hair, and My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding being notable examples. Its latest success story is Ins Choi’s ‘New Play Contest’ winner Kim’s Convenience. Following a sold out run at the 2011 Fringe, this charming, funny, and poignant show about the not always luxurious life of a Korean-Canadian family and their mom and pop convenience store, is back on stage as part of the 2012 Soulpepper season. Here is Ins Choi and his thoughts on the rise of  Kim’s Convenience, the power of customer loyalty – even in the face of a race riot, and the price of cigarettes.

A fresh presence in the Toronto theatre scene, Art & Lies Productions, is having no trouble finding its niche or voice. Founded by a quartet of talented female artists (not that their gender matters), this company is embracing absurdist theatre with a vengeance. With one production already under their belt (Death by Woody Allen), they are back on stage with Jean Paul Sartre’s wry and well known treatise on misery, No Exit. Here are director Rosanna Saracino and co-star L.A. Lopes with their thoughts on the underlying profundity of absurdist theatre, why cramped black box theatres can be a blessing in disguise, and how Bugs Bunny and an Italian upbringing can provide endless inspiration.

Emerging but already widely lauded musical performer, Michael-David Blostein, is currently wowing audiences as the ‘Emcee’ in Kander and Ebb’s dark classic Cabaret – now playing at the Hart House Theatre. Here is the gravy-voiced actor with his thoughts on the admirable and stunningly liberal qualities of pre-Nazi Germany, on working with theatre big-wig Adam Brazier, and why bigger isn’t always better – at least when it comes to performances.
