The 36th annual Dora Awards, honouring Toronto’s best performing arts and artists, were handed out last night at the WestJet stage at the Harbourfront Centre. The open-air setting was a fun nod to amphitheatres of classic theatre history, and proved to be a good match for the casual and bohemian atmosphere. Before the ceremony, Toronto-raised choreographer (and Broadway heavyweight), Sergio Trujillo, was recognized by Toronto City Council for recently having won a prestigious Olivier award (the British equivalent of the Tony award) for his work on Memphis, playing in London’s West End.

The official proceedings began with Host Gavin Crawford making a grand entrance dressed as Kathleen Wynne, charming the crowd with a zinger and inside joke-laced monologue and a sassy musical number. His ad-libs throughout the evening were equally memorable, and played off the ceremony’s inevitable idiosyncratic moments with levity.

The big winners of the night included Blood Wedding (Modern Times Stage Company / Aluna Theatre), Accidental Death of an Anarchist (Soulpepper), Spoon River (Soulpepper), and Once (Mirvish Productions), all of which walked away with multiple awards. The full list of winners is below. For a list of nominees, click here. Congratulations to all!
